The Story

Armadillo officinalis "Spain Giant"

Armadillo officinalis "Spain Giant" is a large, cautious isopod species native to Spain. This species is known for its ability to remain curled tightly long after a threat has passed, offering exceptional protection. When groups are disturbed, they have been observed producing a subtle hissing sound by rubbing their legs against the inside of their shells, earning them the nickname "hissing isopod." Due to their environmental needs, they thrive in temperate and semi-arid conditions but are not suited for tropical enclosures due to molting difficulties in high humidity.

Care Information

  • Requires moderate humidity with occasional misting; avoid excessive moisture to prevent molting issues
  • Should be watered and fed twice a week
  • Diet includes yams, root vegetables, fish food, leaf litter, and soft-bodied plants
  • Prefers a well-ventilated enclosure with coconut fiber, decaying wood, and ample dry spaces
  • Thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C)
  • Nocturnal and social, but slow to establish and best suited for experienced keepers

Live Arrival Guaranteed

Note: Providing a well-balanced moisture gradient and a diet rich in calcium will support healthy growth and molting. Proper ventilation is essential for maintaining a stable enclosure.
